The RR Merlin XII used to power a Spitfire made 1150 HP(
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
). The RMB AM Road Car thingy makes 1000 HP w/o ANY FORCED INDUCTION. We live in amazing times. Better yet, the QUAD TURBO W16 Bugatti Chiron engine with 1489 HP matches a P51 MUSTANG ENGINE!!!
All I can say is let the HP and Bore wars continue!

I’d love to see the thrust/ specific fuel consumption numbers on a Bugatti W16 powered P-51. Car engines usually don’t translate well into an aircraft application.

Isn’t that because aircraft engines are only designed to run efficiently in a narrow band of speeds?

that, and air craft engines have to deal with far more G-forces then a car engine would

That, and they’re intended to be run at something near max power for a long time so they’re lightly stressed and low revving by car standards.

I’m more of a wasp guy. In the apocolypse - air-cooled is king. The smaller iterations would probably do better than this 56 cylinder anchor, though.

So I’m guessing they have a dry sump and a lot more oil squirters

that, and all of non-rotating hardware is MUCH heavier duty. think of how much a crankshaft weighs. now think that not only is it physically a much bigger crank, but when in a dog-fight, you have 9g’s loading up the bearings and the bolts.

Yea, pretty much. Although the Bugatti motor is probably pretty well built for high loads for a long period time. It’d be interesting to see which uses more fuel.

VW engines have been used in aircraft for a long time and Porsche made an aircraft version of the flat 6.

And, of course, several Merlins have been put into cars. Jay Leno has one.

The Wasp Major.
A smaller version called the
double wasp
was our primary air-cooled combat engine in WWII for the Thunderbolt, Corsair, Hellcat, etc.

The main difference is aircraft engines make all their power at 2500 rpm. Any faster than that and the prop tips go supersonic.
